Semillas Fitó has been felicitated with the prestigious Retina ECO 2025 Award in the Sustainable Ecosystem category, for its pioneering project to measure the environmental impact of horticultural varieties. The award was presented by Her Majesty Queen Letizia during the gala held at the Real Teatro de Retiro in Madrid, organized by Prisa Media in collaboration with Capgemini.
Her Majesty the Queen was accompanied by the Third Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen; the Vice President of Prisa and CEO of PRISA Media, Pilar Gil; the Vice President of Prisa, Fernando Carrillo; the CEO of Capgemini, Luis Abad and the General Director of the Teatro Real, Ignacio García-Belenguer.
Representing the company, Elisabet Fitó, Corporate Director of Semillas Fitó, was the one to collect the award.
“With this project, our aim is to reliably measure the sustainability efforts being made across the entire agri-food chain through the seeds,” explained Elisabet Fitó.
The award-winning project, titled “Plant varieties to reduce the ecological footprint of agriculture”, was lauded for its innovative nature, scientific rigour, and its potential for application across the entire agri-food sector. The company, along with Institut Cerdà, has developed a specific methodology adapted to the horticultural sector to calculate the environmental impact at the varietal level, following the principles of the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).

Following the award ceremony, Queen Letizia attended a round table discussion featuring representatives from the winning companies, moderated by Jaime García Cantero, Director of Retina.
