Semillas Fitó has been felicitated in the Food Industry category at the Forbes–UBS Sustainability Awards 2025 for its project “Plant varieties to reduce the ecological footprint of agriculture”. The recognition took place on October 20 in Madrid and highlights family-run businesses and SMEs leading sustainable strategies in Spain.

The Corporate Director of Semillas Fitó, Elisabet Fitó, received the award on behalf of the entire company, accompanied by Juan Jesús Narváez, Head of Operational Excellence and member of the Sustainability Committee.

A pioneering project to measure the environmental impact of horticultural varieties

The jury particularly lauded the innovative methodology developed by Fitó along with the Institut Cerdà to evaluate the environmental impact of different horticultural varieties. Based on the European Commission's Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) approach, the system allows for quantifying indicators such as water footprint, energy consumption, and the use of fertilisers and crop protection products, comparing the performance of various genetic solutions.

Already implemented for crops like peppers and eggplants in the greenhouses of Almería, this tool assists farmers and agri-food chain stakeholders in choosing varieties with superior environmental performance, without compromising on yield or quality.

Leadership in sustainable innovation

With this methodology, Fitó becomes the first company in the horticultural sector to apply an environmental calculation system at the varietal level, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and the development of objective tools to move towards a more sustainable agriculture.

Recognitions that drive momentum

This award follows the recent Sustainable Ecosystem Award from Retina ECO, presented by Prisa Media and Capgemini in a programme presided over by Her Majesty Queen Letizia. Both accolades consolidate Semillas Fitó's focus on a more efficient, responsible agriculture aligned with today's climate challenges.
